My colleague and neighbor here in Osaka, Aussie Peter Grant, is in England
for a year on research sabbatical and is enjoying both Premiership and
lower league football. Here is a report of his recent trip north of London
to see Saffron Walden:

"I drove up to Saffron Walden on the M11 and got there at about 6:15.
I walked around the ground outside a bit and took some photos. I then stuck my head in the gate to see if anyone was around and then wandered in. I talked to the lady from Hertford Town and the referee for a bit and then ambled around the inside of the ground taking shots of the stands etc from different angles. I then went into the clubhouse to see if they had any badges, but unfortunately they didn’t. While I was standing there the bloke who runs the club came up to me and introduced himself. He asked me about myself and when I told him I had driven up from London to see the game he took me under his wing and took me into the hospitality room where I was introduced to the committee members etc and offered a cup of tea. I was going to go stand behind the goal as I usually do but he invited me into the execs box for the game so I went and sat with them. The game started off with Saffron Walden doing a lot of the attacking and they went close a few times until midway through the half they scored a goal from close range. The Saffron Walden captain came off just before half time with a recurring groin injury. The game was 1-0 at half time. I stood there listening to the Herford manager giving the ref an earful as they walked off the ground. He was incensed that 3 of his players had been given yellow cards. I was taken back to the hospitality room for more tea, sandwiches and cake. We returned to the execs box for the second half and we were joined by the Saffron Walden captain. He was a nice bloke and he talked about the players on his team a bit. Saffron Walden went 2 up with another goal scored from deep inside the penalty box and it looked like they would run away with the game until Hertford Town were awarded a controversial penalty kick for a handball which they converted to make it 2-1. The Saffron Walden keeper had earlier made a glaring error when he came out to clear a ball and looked in two minds what to do and ended up missing the ball which luckily for him just went wide of the post. I thought it was going to go in the net for a second. Hertford Town seemed to come awake from that point and pressed forward time after time and were unlucky not to get an equalizer when the Saffron Walden keeper made a good save by parrying the ball around for a corner.
Saffron Walden broke against the run of play a few times in the last 10 minutes and were unlucky not to have gone further ahead. The referee finally blew his whistle to signify the end of the game. I went into the clubhouse to thank everyone for their kindness and then I shot off home.
